Inches beneath the grass on ground that has seen its fair share of Frisbee games, dog walks and couples holding hands over the years lie clues to how people lived more than a century ago.
As part of O'Fallon's ongoing celebration of its 150th birthday, six archaeologists from the Archaeological Research Center of St. Louis have been dodging the rainstorms while they dig for just those clues in Fort Zumwalt Park.
Their mission: to find pieces of ordinary objects that give a better picture of the slaves owned by the Heald homestead in the 1800s.
