Okay, slightly better pun Students dig in to archaeology
Gabby Porras hunches over her plot of sod, patiently brushing aside layer after layer with her plastic trowel. After several minutes, the 8-year-old hits paydirt — a rusted metal washer.
“I found a wheel,” she exclaimed, pleased with the results of her first archaeological dig.
Gabby was one of 130 ECISD gifted and talented students who trekked Thursday to Gardendale for a simulated excavation.
“The first- and second-graders have been studying ancient Egypt and Egyptology,” Pam Hicks, ECISD’s elementary coordinator of advanced academic services. “They know that modern archaeologists learned about ancient civilizations through archaeological techniques.”
