Archaeologists in Lethbridge are excited by the discovery of artifacts which are giving them new insight into southern Alberta's earliest inhabitants. But the researchers now find themselves in a race against time – and thieves - to retrieve what they can from their dig site.
Students from the University of Lethbridge are working long hours to get to the bottom of the area's history by digging up old artifacts just outside of the city.
"You're the first person to touch that bone or stone tool since the people who put it there originally," said archaeology student Courtney Rode, explaining the thrill of the hunt. This is the second year the students have excavated the site, and thanks to carbon dating technology, they now know the bones and tools are a lot older than they first thought.
