During the reign of the Moundville chieftains, most of the people under their political control lived in the Black Warrior River Valley and paid tribute to those living on the mounds.
One of those small communities lies beneath River Road Park, and this semester, students from the University of Alabama plan to excavate the more than 600-year-old site.
"There hasn't been very much research at all on these sites where most people actually lived," said Jim Knight, anthropology professor.
